Joy Richardson

Joy left Guyana aged three and was raised in London's East End. Her work explores the point at which cultures meet and share the rituals of daily life. These rituals give a sense of belonging or exclusion.

What is exchanged when cultures meet, how identity lost and gained, and can identity blossom where there is a cultural gap are the themes of her colourful, figurative paintings.

It was Fourteen years before Joy returned to Guyana, but is there ever a returning?

Using oil on canvas Joy explores the daily rituals of life that bring people together. Though rituals such as buying food, washing, and grooming exist in all cultures, embedded in these actions are complexities of codes which have the power to instantly expose one as an outsider, judged and defined.

The numerous layers of thin paint build layers of colour to symbolize both harmony and dislocation both in the image and the simple act of painting.
