‘Written in the Sand’
A film, hats and a journey around Qatar by Pip Hackett

3rd – 18th November 2011
Private view Thursday 3rd November, Film screening at 7.30pm
Location: Gallery & Project Space

This November Great Western Studios will celebrate the exceptional milliner Pip Hackett. Come to an evening of film and photographs – with our GWS vintage usherettes: Popcorn Girl and Cupcake Girl – while Storm models show off Pip’s fabulous hats.

She will be showing a film of her travels in Qatar, where she learnt about its history, talked to people about costume and clothes, and gained inspiration from the landscape. She uncovered the story of the country’s traditional costumes – from the female abaya (black cloak) to the male thaub (white robe).

Through new eyes she examines the heritage of the country.  Everything from the multifaceted sky-line to ancient architecture was inspiration for Pip’s own designs. Pip looked at how traditional clothes were made, how people wear clothes in Qatar – she believes that clothing makes a person.

This journey culminated in the creation of a millinery collection called “Written in the Sand”. A collection of hats, photographs and a montage of images, which was shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and will be shown at GWS this November.

Serious Pictures produced the film and it was broadcast on television in the Middle East and also shown on the infamous airline, Qatar Airways on over a million flights around the world culminating on fan mail from across the globe!

Pip’s hats have graced catwalks all over the world. Each hat, Pip sees as a ‘walking work of art’. This film and the hat collection is a tribute to Qatar and a way of life.

Notes on colour
Prints by Sophie Smallhorn

3rd – 29th October 2011
Private View: 11th October
Location: Gallery & Project Space

Sophie Smallhorn has been described as ‘a colour alchemist’ by Building Design Magazine for her famed colour work on the Olympic Stadium.  The prints she is working on for her October show at Great Western Studios, get her back in the studio. Mixing, playing and taking risks with colour and form, the work is both classical and sharp. Although maintained in a formal 400 x 400mm square the varying colour and form are a story of combinations unfolding as brilliant experiments and cool juxtapositions.

This show will be a unique opportunity to see work by an artist renown for her public commissions: including for Commes des Garçon, Canary Wharf, Goodwood Sculpture Park, the City Academy in Nottingham and creating colour scapes for public places.

Sophie Smallhorn was born in 1971 and is an artist and consultant. She exhibits internationally and is commissioned by both private and corporate clients.  This year she showed at Collect at the Saatchi Gallery in collaboration with designer Sebastian Bergne. She is working on a glass canopy for a new building in Victoria and has just finished a 21 colour mural on the exterior of a private house in Basel, Switzerland. All her work explores the relationships between colour, volume and proportion. Sophie currently lives and works in London

Sophie Smallhorn’s prints are a quotidian, back to basics thought process on her preoccupation in the delights of colour. This is a unique return to fundamentals, come and enjoy a tour de force in colour and form.

Ergo launch new brew for Carlsberg

Branding and Innovations consultancy Ergo, based here at Great Western Studios, have recently launched a new product for Carlsberg called Beo*. Beo*, a ‘brewed soft drink’, is Carlsberg’s first venture into radical innovation – using their brewing skills to create a new type of drink. Focusing their research on the opportunity for ‘adult soft drinks’, Ergo developed a brand to reflect the product experience – “Delightfully Refreshing” – natural, fresh yet sophisticated. They created the packaging, brand guidelines and brand magazine, and devised a refreshing launch strategy.

September has been a big month for Ergo in the Danish press, on both the launch of Beo* and the state of global branding. For those who are interested in brand development; Ergo are looking for a creative team to collaborate with and share their space. Ergo develops each project through collaboration with diverse creatives – and is looking for brand designers to share their beautiful studio in exchange for occasional collaborative work.

Dishoom Chowpatty beach created in spirit of Jugaad
The creative and build – Honest Entertainment

This summer, the South Bank is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the original Festival of Britain. As part of this Honest Entertainment were enlisted by Dishoom to take you on a little summer holiday, right here in London. Taking over an old sad portacabin, Honest has injected into the Southbank landscape a magical Chowpatty Beach pop-up bar, named after the eponymous beach in Bombay.

Southbank have installed 48 tonnes of sand in front of the psychedelic pop-up beach bar Dishoom where children build sand castles whilst their parents sip on fresh coconuts from a boat painted by Sam Birch and Rebecca Menzies, Honest’s artists in residence.

The design spirit and inspiration evolved from Honest’s discovery of the Hindi term ‘Jugaad’ which means ‘making do’, ‘reusing’ or ‘creative improvisation’.

Many of the materials are either recycled, found or second hand and have been reinvented and up-cycled creating a welcoming homely and relaxing vibe that is completely in keeping with the growing awareness and opportunity for sustainable design. Honest felt the ‘Jugaad’ approach appropriate in current climates. It is not sterile or permanent in its conception/execution but clever and accessible to all in its tactile approach. You can sense and appreciate many hands at work in its making… Sid from the Studios made the Irani café style tables and Afroditi who won awards for the design of Dishoom Covent Garden acted as a brand advisor.

It truly is a magical place as expressed by visitors in chalk on the blackboard toilet walls: “Thank you for being so creative” is Honest’s favourite so far! They hope you will make it down and leave your own messages. Their cocktail of choice is the Colaba Rum Iced Tea which “we hear” is delicious!

Talk: Drink Food Design

Thursday 28th May 2011
Speakers: Julian Metcalfe, Afroditi Krassa and Fernando Gutiérrez.
Location: Gallery & Project Space

As part of Great Western Studio’s talk series Talking Ideas: Drink Food Design – will look at how to design for food and particularly wine and how the commissioning process works. This includes restaurant design, designing cookbooks , designing branding for food outlets and designing wine labels.

The talk will look at designing for the consumable. How does a wine label attract the buyer, signal a particular region, sum up a taste? How does a restaurant brand itself so that the food makes sense with the décor? How does good design make food and wine taste even better?

About the Speakers

Julian Metcalfe is the co-founder of Pret A Manger and itsu. Pret A Manger, now in its 25th anniversary year, has over 260 shops worldwide. Itsu (like Pret) does not have a factory or buy in ‘ready to sell’ food, it’s made fresh in every shop. Metcalfe started itsu with the Chelsea conveyor belt restaurant in 1997. The real breakthrough for itsu came with the opening of its first shop on Hanover Square. Many months of development work created an extraordinary harmony between design, equipment, menu and staff.

Afroditi Krassa studied at the Royal College of Art and then became the first ever female designer to be employed by super-duo SeymourPowell. At 23 she redesigns the bra for Channel 4 documentary and sells 2 million. In 2002, she founds Afroditikrassa Ltd since then she has been working with leading brands such as Cassina, DKNY, Ligne Roset, Innermost, E&Y, and Mourad Mazouz (Momo) of sketch. In 2004, she met Julian Metcalfe, who invited her to conceive his new “baby” brand. Two months later, she came back with itsu, now with almost 30 stores in two continents. Krassa is currently working on taking the itsu brand on to the next stage, as well as branding and designing for major UK and international food retailers.

Studio Fernando Gutiérrez specialises in graphic design. His recent projects include the new identity and design implementation for the Prado Museum, The Goya Foundation in Aragon and The Roman amphitheatre in Cartagena, as well as a number of Spanish wineries such as Compania de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez, Valdesil, Losada and Duraton; and the Italian winery Monte Rosola and the French winery Chateau La Casenove. The studio has also been involved in design projects promoting Foster + Partners, and elBulli, exhibition catalogue design for international artists such as Thomas Struth, Ai Wei Wei and many more catalogue design and exhibition graphics at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, and Design Museum.

Pip Hackett

As our expert in all things beautiful for hair, Pip Hackett’s exotic head pieces are garlanding magazines this season. You can see Natalia Vodjanova in a cute bunny headpiece on the cover of May’s Tatler and an elegant flowery piece on the cover of Italian Vogue (March ’11) followed by a collection of eerie, romantic bridal wear.

Also in Tatler, her hats have been used in a shoot by Kristian Schuller both for the opening page and in a feature. Bridal (May/June) mentions her hat in a piece on the best country wedding.
