Precipice

When Precipice design brands and products that people feel a connection to, even love, there are many forces at work. The look, the features, the technology are important. But something much more powerful is going on too. People buy meanings. And a large part of what products do is communicate these wordlessly. They help tell the story of who we are, where we come from, the tribe we belong to, and the relationships we want to have. Meaning-centred design helps you see the world as it is and how it could be different. It helps address the more subtle, deeper meanings that design has to deliver in order to win. You can do this intuitively, without even knowing, or you can do with a map and a destination in mind. By mastering the emotional and cultural meanings that drive consumer behaviour, meaning-centred design transforms the often unseen, implicit or buried, turning it into innovation and commercial opportunity with the power to shift markets.

Bethan Gray

Award-winning Welsh designer Bethan Gray launched two collections of table lights, wall lights and pendant lights, handcrafted by master artisans from Italian marble, at Milan Design Week. The first collection, shown here, has been developed from her Victoria tea set and features a relief pattern, hand-carved from Arabescato marble by Italian master craftsmen, paired with brushed brass to add warmth. ‘The idea came to me when I held the Victoria tea cup over a light source and noticed how the light emphasised both the veins in the marble and the carved ridges,’ says Bethan. ‘Although we had to completely re-engineer the concept for lighting – creating a hollow sphere from marble is quite a feat.’ The second collection has come out of Bethan’s Alice collection, originally inspired by the spectacular black and white stone configurations found in historical buildings across Europe, in particular the 12th century Cathedral in Siena.

Kristina Horne’s upcoming exhibition at The Crypt Gallery

Join Kristina Horne for her latest exhibition at The Crypt Gallery between Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd of May.

Transcendental Thresholds is about crossing corporeal boundaries. Departing from the physical, structural and architectural, this sculptural exhibition draws attention to the physical as a dominating part of human experience. Evoking transitory earthly existence, the fragile glass forms appear to melt over the thresholds of the metal structures and elude to the body’s impermanence and traces of what it leaves behind.

Come along to the private view on Wednesday 2nd May between 6-9pm. Click here for more details.

Bethan Gray

One of the latest additions to Bethan Gray’s Shamsian Collection is their new Monochrome finish, shown here on the 3-door Nizwa cabinet. The detailing takes inspiration from the architectural patterning of the Nizwa Fort in Oman. Elegantly crafted using brass overlay, the repeating pattern on Bethan’s Nizwa pieces reflect the rounded architectural composition of the fort’s castellation. The Nizwa collection is made with beautiful maple veneer sourced from Italy and the ombré effect on the cabinet is created by hand using a technique called stain shading.

KPPR

Having sold out his stand up shows across five continents, Noah’s appeal has rocketed even further over the past two years, since he took over hosting duties from Jon Stewart on Comedy Central’s Emmy Award-winning news satire programme The Daily Show in the US, in September 2015. This will be the first time in two and a half years that the celebrated comedian has performed in the UK.
